It has been some time since the DSA application was completed. Are you ready for DSA? A very important part about DSA is"interview". Although there are other means of assessing your child’s suitability, such as admission tests and camps. There are two types of interviews: the solo interview and the group interview.Frankly speaking, at age 12, it is very rare for a child, unprepared, to naturally just perform well in an interview. But with preparation and confidence, child should be able to ace it. What can we do for this interview? 1. Prepare for the commonly asked questions Doing the “homework” before the interview is crucial, as it improves answering skills and also increases your confidencein tackling difficult questions. To prepare comprehensively, it is recommended that you prepare and rehearse your answers for the commonly asked questions.
You should practise answering each question honestly and tactfully. Try to elaborate on them so that you can fully demonstrate your skills or who you are in the questions that you are asked.
Familiarizing with some of the questions can be useful, but not overtraining to the extent of being unnatural or memorizing a script written by mommy or daddy, which can be easily detected by the interviewing committee.
2. Stay Humble Yet Confident While humility is a virtue, a healthy level of confidence is also necessary during the interview to show that you know what you can bring to the table. Maintaining this delicate balance can be tough .
The key is not to adopt a bragging tone when talking about one’s achievements, but to stay positive and self-assured. Greet your interviewers with a smile before you begin the interview, and keep your tone calm when confronted with difficult questions.
When presenting your list of accomplishments, you can also express your eagerness for further learning so it reflects the openness for guidance and self-improvement.
Be careful! When it is not your turn, do not attempt to answer the question unless the student cannot handle the question and the interviewer has indicated the rest of the students in the room can answer.
3. Share Personal Experiences One of the most effective ways to bond with someone is to share personal experiences. This principle also applies for interviews. While interviewers care about what you are good at, they are alsomore likely to accept the interviewee whom they feel more connected to.
When asked questions regarding CCA experiences or future aspirations, you can feel free to share relevant anecdotes that will build resonance. Passion is contagious, and can influence your interviewers to believe in you vision too.
4. Present as a Well-Rounded Individual The focus of DSA is on talents beyond academics. Therefore, during the interview, you should share more aspects of yourself that can present you as a well-rounded individual who is not just concerned with exam results.
Depending on your unique strengths, you can choose to showcase leadership competence, social skills, music, athletic orcreative abilities.
Interviewers may be looking out for: strong communication skills, confidence, ability to adapt to unexpected events and whether applicant can value-add to the domain he or she specializes in. Body language is also important: your child should sit up straight, maintain theright posture and maintain eye contact with interviewer. Schools are looking to accept students who can boost their reputation through future contributions.
5. Present as a Cultural Fit Lastly, do your research on the school culture of the institution you are interviewing for and present yourself as acultural fit.
The saying “birds of a feather flocktogether” also applies to school admission. Generally, interviewers are looking for a student who is not just accomplished in his own way, but is also aligned with the school’s main values.
Some schools are more focused on traditional values like hard work and humility, while others are known to bemore encouraging of innovation and social prowess. Before the interview, you can choose to either conduct mock interviews alone or with someone playing the interviewer.

DSA applicant and applicant school · How do you think our school can support your interests? · What questions would you like to ask us? · What is your definition of a good school? · How do you manage your time if you have frequent school trainings (for sports/music DSA)? · Would you compromise on your interests or passion becauseof a busy study schedule? · What is the math theory which interest you the most (for Mathematics DSA)? · What are the changes would you like to see to the science curriculum? (for Science DSA)? · Are there any events or people you remember the most during your 3 to 6 years of CCA? · The school’s programme and motivation for choosing the school. · Why should we choose you for DSA? · Why do you like to play Badminton/tennis…? (for Sports DSA) · Did you DSA to another school? If both offer you a place,which would you choose?
Non-routine questions about the applicant’s reasoning process and the applicant’s ability to think on the spot and handle surprise · If you are the Prime Minister of Singapore, what will you do to make this country better? · If you are only allowed to bring one item to Mars, what will you bring? · Which part of a car would you like to be and why? · Look around the room and find something that best describes you.
Questions about social issues and current saffairs · Is there any discrimination in Singapore? If you are the Prime Minister what will you do to prevent discrimination? · What do you think about education system in Singapore? · What makes you proud of living in Singapore? · How do you look at the news of MRT breakdowns? · What do you think about Steve Jobs and iPhone?
(For group interviews) Questions related to teamwork. Interviewers also look out for the interactions between the applicantsand problem-solving skills. · Who should we choose out of all the applicants in this room? · Is your primary school the best? BEST WISHES TO YOU!!!
