2025 DSA Interview Guide: Full Strategy for Parents and Students As the first round of DSA interviews at NUS High School has concluded, the 2025 DSA interview season is officially underway. More schools are beginning to send interview invitations to shortlisted students. This article will guide you through everything you need to know about DSA interviews—from formats to techniques, sample answers, and common questions—so students can step in with confidence and come out prepared. Part 1: Interview Formats & Language Format: Group Interview (most common): Students answer the same question in turn without discussion. Group Discussion: Some schools ask students to collaborate and present ideas. Individual Interview: One-on-one interview with a panel or a teacher. Language: Most interviews are conducted in English. Chinese DSA / Bilingual DSA may include Mandarin interviews. Some SAP schools may use Mandarin even in non-language DSA. Part 2: Interview Techniques (with Examples) Tip 1: Research the School and Prepare Specific Responses Key Point: Show that you understand the school’s strengths and explain why you are a good match. Avoid vague or generic praise. Sample Question: Why did you choose our school? Sample Answer: I learned that your school places a strong emphasis on research and critical thinking, especially through the XX Programme. I enjoy doing experiments—for instance, I once built a simple water filter for a science fair. I believe this school’s environment fits my interests and goals. Strategy: Focus on "fit". Name a specific school programme, link it to your real experience, and explain why that makes you a good candidate. Tip 2: Show Confidence with Humility Key Point: Present yourself positively without boasting. Be respectful, team-oriented, and growth-minded. Sample Question: What would you do if you are selected? Sample Answer: I’d be grateful for the opportunity and would treat it as a new beginning. I’d continue working hard and look forward to contributing in my CCA, especially in a leadership role if possible. Sample Question: What if you are not selected? Sample Answer: I would feel disappointed, but I’d also reflect on what I learned. This interview helped me grow, and I’ll use it as motivation to improve myself further. Strategy: Show maturity and emotional intelligence. Use keywords like "grateful", "teamwork", "learn", and "improve". Tip 3: Use Personal Stories to Highlight Your Strengths Key Point: Replace generic claims with vivid, real-life examples using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Sample Question: Tell us about something you’re proud of. Sample Answer: I was class monitor during a charity event. One day before the event, the supplier canceled. I quickly re-coordinated with volunteers and helped pick up materials. Our class raised the most funds. I learned to stay calm and lead under pressure. Strategy: Choose a moment that highlights leadership, responsibility, or resilience. Be specific and outcome-driven.
Tip 4: Highlight Holistic Qualities Key Point: DSA isn't just about academics. Show your personality, CCA experiences, and how you manage your time and interests. Sample Question: How do you balance schoolwork with your interests? Sample Answer: I love drawing and joined the art club. I practise during weekends and plan my schedule weekly. Art helps me stay focused and relax, which supports my academic work too. Strategy: Show time management and how your interest positively affects your learning. Tip 5: Speak with Structure Key Point: Use logical frameworks (e.g., three-point answers, cause-effect-result) to keep your answers clear and organised. Sample Question: What qualities make a good student? Sample Answer: I believe a good student needs three traits. First, self-discipline to stay focused. Second, curiosity to keep learning. Third, teamwork to grow with others. Strategy: Use clear, numbered points or a simple structure. Avoid listing vague values—explain why each one matters. Tip 6: Stay Calm and Adaptable Key Point: It’s not about perfection—stay composed when asked unexpected questions. Take time to think, repeat the question, and answer with logic. Sample Question: If you were a part of a car, what would you be? Sample Answer: I’d be the steering wheel—it helps the team move in the right direction. I often take the lead in group projects, helping plan and listen to others’ ideas. Strategy: For metaphor questions, describe the part’s role, then relate it to your traits or experiences.
Tip 7: Be Genuine—Don’t Memorise Answers Key Point: Interviewers value authenticity. Real stories with real feelings leave a better impression than rehearsed “model” answers. Sample Question: What is your biggest dream? Sample Answer: I hope to become someone who helps others. When I was hospitalised, a kind doctor made me feel safe and cared for. That experience made me want to support others too—whether through medicine or in other ways. Strategy: Don’t exaggerate. Ground your answers in real memories and emotions to make them relatable and sincere. Part 3: Frequently Asked Questions List Self-Introduction & Personal Traits Describe yourself in one sentence.
