Preparation Tips for Primary 6 Preliminary Examination (Prelim) Week
Next week is the Preliminary Examination (Prelim) week for Primary 6 students across schools. This marks their first major exam simulation, serving as crucial preparation for the PSLE. We believe students have revised diligently and are ready to achieve their target scores in the Prelim, boosting their confidence for the PSLE.
Here are practical tips to help students perform their best:
1. Before the Exam
- Prepare Your Exam Materials, ensure you have all necessary stationery:
1: Pencils (Use 2B for OAS shading)
2: Clean eraser
3: Black pens (for writing)
4: Ruler
5: Protractor
6: Calculator (check battery!)
7: Any other items required by your school or subject.

- Get Proper Rest and Sleep:
A good night's sleep before the exam is more valuable than last-minute cramming.
While pre-exam nerves and racing thoughts are normal, remember that sleep deprivation hurts performance. Go to bed early to ensure a clear, focused mind for the exam.

2. During the Exam

1: Read Questions Carefully: Underline or circle key information (numbers, conditions) and units to avoid missing details.
2: Pay Attention to Units: Always check if units need to be converted before calculating.
3: MCQ Answer Sheet (OAS): For Paper 1 (MCQ), write your answers on the question paper first, then transfer them to the OAS. This makes checking easier and prevents misalignment.
4: Show Clear Working Steps: For questions requiring working, write steps neatly from top to bottom and left to right. Box your final answer at the bottom right.
5: Write Answers Clearly: Ensure numbers are legible and always include the correct unit.
6: Check Against the Question: After answering, quickly re-read the question to confirm you've answered what was asked.
7: Use Algebra Sparingly: Avoid relying heavily on algebra. If the final answer is wrong, working marks are usually not awarded. Use clear methods (like models) instead. Reserve algebra only if truly stuck.
8: Briefly Describe Key Steps: Add short descriptions next to important working steps to help the examiner follow your logic.
9: Manage Your Time: If stuck on a question for more than 3 minutes, mark it and move on. Complete the rest of the paper first, then return to the marked questions.
10: Use Remaining Time to Check Thoroughly:
1)Verify OAS Answers: Carefully check that answers on the OAS match those on your question paper.
2)Recalculate Key Answers: Cover your original working and recalculate answers for important questions, especially calculations.
3)Re-check Question Requirements: Ensure you haven't missed any conditions or details given in the question.
4)The more errors you catch during checking, the closer you are to a high score like AL1.

11:Post-Exam Mindset: After leaving the exam hall, try to put it behind you. Avoid excessive discussion or worrying about how you did. Focus your energy immediately on preparing for the next paper. Remember, results are only confirmed upon release – don't let a previous exam affect subsequent ones.

Wishing all Primary 6 students a successful Prelim examination week!
Good luck!
