P5 PSLE Math Open Class Recap: Cracking Pattern Problems with Tr. Pamelyn

This Friday Tr. Pamelyn conducted a well-structured math open class for P5 students at Kangaroo Study.

The focus of this lesson was Pattern Problems—a frequently tested and often tricky question type in the P5 SA2 exams. Many students lose marks here because they miss key relationships or fall into hidden traps. Through three carefully selected examples, Tr. Pamelyn introduced different methods for spotting patterns and guided students to strengthen both their problem-solving logic and confidence.

Lesson Walkthrough

The class began with Tr. Pamelyn giving a warm and engaging self-introduction, followed by a clear explanation of class rules:
-  Students were asked to put down their pens, look at the board, and focus during explanations.
-  Parents were reminded to remain quiet and not interrupt the class or take calls.

Tr. Pamelyn then distributed worksheets and moved on to the main content. The lesson covered three progressively challenging problems:

Question 1: Students learned two common ways to identify patterns—through numbers and through figures. Tr. Pamelyn also introduced the concept of arithmetic sequences and explained how to apply it.

Question 2: The class explored square number sequences, helping students recognize and use them in problem-solving.

Question 3: Students were reminded to pay attention not only to the numbers themselves but also to the relationship between the terms and their positions. This is a common exam trap, and avoiding it can prevent unnecessary mistakes.

After explaining the questions, students were given ample time to attempt practice questions. Tr. Pamelyn personally marked and provided feedback, while high-performing students received stamp rewards. This kept the atmosphere focused yet motivating, and students left each round with a stronger sense of achievement.

At the end of the session, Tr. Pamelyn also prepared a short quiz for students to complete independently. Any student who had questions was not allowed to leave until they fully understood the solution. This fully reflected our teaching philosophy: "No Understanding, No leaving."

This open class not only helped students tackle Pattern Problems more effectively but also gave them a boost in logical reasoning and mathematical confidence.

About the Teacher
    11.jpg

Tr. Pamelyn graduated from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), majoring in Mathematical Sciences. With over two years of teaching experience, she firmly believes in the "understand first, then practice" approach. She excels at breaking down complex problems and clearly explaining key concepts, guiding students step-by-step from "I don't understand" to "I can solve this." In class, she actively encourages students to ask questions and share their thoughts, helping them gradually build confidence and logical thinking skills.

Parent Feedback

After the class, many parents shared that Tr. Pamelyn’s explanations were clear, and their children could understand and solve the problems effectively. Some also highlighted the positive classroom environment and mentioned that their children really liked Tr. Pamelyn and were looking forward to joining her future classes.

Do you require additional help?

If you need additional help with the preparation for SA2, we have a P5 Semester 2 class that will start from 29th August. It will run every Friday, 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

With approximately two months remaining until SA2, we will conduct in-depth analysis by practising key and challenging question types for SA2 during this period.

Class Syllabus

Our syllabus has a comprehensive coverage of the challenging points in SA2. Lesson 2 will focus on studying three major abstract relationships in the SA2 exam, ensuring a solid foundation in key concepts. Lessons 1, 3, 4, and 7 will cover the eight major application problems. In addition, based on analysis of exam conditions, we also include expanded sections on angle calculations, pattern recognition, and geometric area to ensure mastery of all tested content.

We also incorporate structured review practices into our teaching methodology to help students develop effective revision habits.

Entrance Test
If you are interested in signing up for the class, an entrance test has to be taken first. This is not just an entrance test but also an assessment of essential knowledge for P5 SA2. After the test, there will be free explanations by teachers.

Test and Class Location: #02-12, Grantral Mall, 601 MacPherson Road, 368242
