Since last year, P4 students are no longer allowed to join the NMOS competition. This has made many parents feel even more unsure about their child’s Olympiad journey. How should they plan Olympiad learning at this stage? Is their child suitable to continue? And how should they set goals? To help parents better understand the Olympiad learning pathway, Kangaroo Study specially invited Tr. Yi Jie, our Head of Primary 4, to give a practical and systematic sharing session on this Sunday, July 20 at 10am. Lecture Highlights Tr. Yi Jie started by explaining what Olympiad math really is. He guided parents to understand the real difference between school math and Olympiad math — it’s not just harder questions, but a way to train your child’s system thinking and deeper understanding. Through his sharing, parents started to realise that the key is not whether Olympiad is hard, but whether the child has interest, basic ability, and the habit of thinking. Next, Tr. Yi Jie introduced the three main Olympiad competitions in Singapore — NMOS, RMO, and APMOPS. He went through the timelines, focus areas, question styles, award system, score lines and winning rates. He also shared how top schools like RI, HCI and NUSH recognise different awards and how that may affect admission chances. Parents were busy taking pictures of the slides. In the middle of the talk, Tr. Yi Jie gave clear advice on setting goals at P4 level. He said this year is very important to build foundation and direction. Whether a child is suitable for Olympiad depends not just on results, but also whether they enjoy thinking and like maths. At the end, Tr. Yi Jie gave a brief intro to Kangaroo Study’s P4 Olympiad curriculum. Every family who came also received a free copy of the NMOS All-in-One Practice Book as a learning material. After the session, many parents stayed behind to ask more questions and talk to the teacher. The atmosphere was very warm and full of discussion.
