GEP Second-Round Crash Course Recap | Mastering Word Problems with Tr. Boqian

On Wednesday, Teacher Boqian kicked off Day 1 of the GEP Second-Round Crash Course, with a focus on “Word Problem Mastery.”

This session was designed to help students systematically review high-frequency word problem concepts, tackle challenging and error-prone questions, and build a solid foundation for the upcoming Second-Round exam.

At the start of the lesson, Teacher Boqian explained why the GEP Round 2 Intensive Course was created.

In the GEP second-round exam, word problems take up a very large proportion. Based on our analysis of the past four years of papers, word problems account for as much as 47.83%!

As a hot exam focus, word problems include:
  • Frequently tested topics such as sum-difference–multiple problems.
  • Challenging topics such as excess and shortage problem or the chicken and rabbit problem.
  • Trick topics such as calendar problems.

Because of this, targeted intensive training is especially important.

Beyond word problems, the second round also introduces new topics, with geometry (area & perimeter) being tested most heavily. On top of that, there are many comprehensive problems rarely seen in school math — which can be very hard to solve if students encounter them for the first time in the real exam.

Aimed at helping students strengthen these critical areas before the exam, Teacher Boqian introduced the structure of our 3-day crash course:
  • Day 1: Word Problem Mastery – Tackle high-frequency topics, difficult problems, and common pitfalls.
  • Day 2: Geometry Focus – Build confidence in area and perimeter questions and understand common exam traps.
  • Day 3: Comprehensive Problem Training – Broaden thinking and strategies for rare but challenging problem types.

This structure ensures that students gain a thorough understanding of the exam's structure and key focus areas, enabling them to boost their problem-solving ability efficiently in a short time.

Throughout the class, students remained highly focused. They were not only listening attentively, but also actively participating in discussions, asking questions, and volunteering answers.

At the end of the session, a short post-class test was arranged to evaluate learning progress. This allowed the tracking of students' grasp of the materials covered, and for any adjustments for the upcoming sessions.

Through this class, students not only consolidated their understanding of word problems, but also gained early exposure to the types and difficulty levels of the Round 2 exam, effectively laying a strong foundation for the final phase of preparation.
