P4 Open Class Recap: Mastering the "Tricks in Perimeter Calculation" with Tr. Yi Jie

This weekend, Teacher Yi Jie conducted a focused and in-depth open class on “Tricks in Perimeter Calculation” for P4 students.

The main focus of the class was to move beyond simply adding all the sides and to develop advanced problem-solving logic. These types of problems are essential for building strong spatial reasoning and mathematical thinking for the P4 curriculum and beyond.

1. Lesson Recap

At the beginning of the class, Teacher Yi Jie used a guiding question (the "brick wall" problem) to challenge the students' initial assumptions. This helped them form a clear mental picture and see the limitations of basic calculation.

As the explanation progressed, the students actively began to hunt for "clues" in the diagrams. The entire open class revolved around three core strategies, guiding the students step by step to master complex perimeter problems.

Strategy 1 (The "Thinking as a Whole" Trick): Using the "Brick Wall" problem (Q1), the focus was on treating the entire figure as one single group. Students learned to first find the relationship between the length and width by looking at the whole figure, rather than getting stuck on a single brick. This "big picture" view is the key to solving the problem.

Strategy 2 (The 60° "Build & Shift" Trick): This concept was applied to "mountain" or jagged-line problems (Q2). Students discovered two powerful methods:
Construction: When seeing an inner 60° angle, they were guided to try construct equilateral triangles to create a larger, simpler shape.
Translation: When parallel lines are present, students learned to apply the translation method, "shifting" all the jagged segments to form a single, straight side, making the calculation simple.

Strategy 3 (The 120° "Complete the Shape" Trick): For advanced pentagons and hexagons (Q3), students learned that a 120° inner angle is a powerful clue. The trick is to construct equilateral triangles outwardly from these angles. This "completes" the figure, turning a complex polygon into a set of simple triangles, which allows them to solve for the missing sides.

During this process, Teacher Yi Jie walked around the classroom to observe and guide the students, providing timely feedback and helping them further consolidate what they had learned through practice.

This open class offered students more than just formulas; it was a complete exercise in learning methods and ways of thinking—from “understanding the clue” to “applying the trick.”

5. How To Enroll?
All students are required to complete a placement test before enrolling. This allows our team to assess the child’s current level and recommend the most suitable class.

Enrolment Process
1. Book a placement test
2. Receive assessment results and class recommendation
3. Confirm time slot and teacher, complete registration and payment
