P4 Geometry Workshop Recap: Mastering the Half Model with Teacher Yi Jie
Introduction to the Workshop Last Saturday afternoon, Teacher Yi Jie led a focused geometry workshop for our Primary 4 students. The topic of the day was the Half Model, which is a powerful and elegant problem-solving concept that often appears in NMOS competitions and forms a key part of our geometry curriculum. Step-by-Step: Inside the Classroom The session began with a warm welcome and a quick registration. After taking attendance, Teacher Yi Jie set the tone for the workshop with a clear and engaging explanation of the Half Model, using an introductory question to help students visualise the idea. As the concept unfolded, students became increasingly focused, quickly spotting patterns and geometric relationships within the shapes. The workshop was structured around four carefully selected example questions that built upon each other step by step: Question 1 introduced the rectangle-based Half Model, laying a strong foundation and helping students understand how a diagonal line creates two equal-area triangles.
Question 2 transitioned into parallelograms, guiding students to realise that the same half-area logic applies despite the slanted sides.
Questions 3 and 4 raised the level of challenge. Both were taken from past NMOS papers and tested students’ ability to apply the Half Model in unfamiliar, competition-style settings.
After each of the first three questions, students were given a similar practice problem to solve independently. Teacher Yi Jie walked around to offer support and observe students’ thinking processes—reinforcing the concept through immediate, targeted feedback.
Takeaways from the Workshop
This workshop was more than just a geometry lesson but a prime example of how structured teaching, active participation, and timely feedback can make abstract concepts come alive. Students didn’t just memorise formulas. They developed spatial awareness, visual reasoning, and the confidence to tackle future geometry questions with independence. Parents also sit back and took down notes carefully. About the Instructor: Teacher Yi Jie
Graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a major in Applied Statistics, Teacher Yi Jie brings both strong subject knowledge and a deep passion for teaching. With two years of experience, he has a unique ability to break down complex ideas and turn them into something relatable for students. His calm, encouraging teaching style helps students feel safe to ask questions, try new things, and develop a genuine love for learning. Parent Feedback
Teacher Yi Jie has consistently received positive feedback from parents, who appreciate his clear explanations, engaging teaching style, and ability to help students grasp challenging concepts. Many have noted their children’s increased confidence and independence in learning, and several have expressed interest in joining more of his classes in the future. These affirmations reflect not only the quality of his instruction, but also the trust and confidence that families place in him as an educator. Closing Thoughts
Workshops like this reflect our ongoing commitment to making math both accessible and enjoyable for every learner. If you’d like your child to continue exploring mathematics in a supportive and engaging environment, feel free to join our P4 study group and stay tuned!
