A Quick Recap of Tr. Yu Xian's RMO and APMOPS Preparation Talk
The NMOS has just concluded, and many students and parents are already turning their attention to preparation strategies for the upcoming RMO and APMOPS. As two highly competitive and challenging math competitions, finding a structured and effective approach to prepare has become a key concern for many. To help parents gain a clearer understanding of how to prepare for the RMO and APMOPS, Kangaroo Study invited our Head of Primary 5, Teacher Yu Xian, to deliver a comprehensive sharing session on Sunday, 3 August, at 3pm.
Recap of the seminar
During the session, Teacher Yu Xian began by comparing the three major Math Olympiad competitions, helping parents understand the key differences between NMOS, RMO, and APMOPS. He stressed that preparation for RMO and APMOPS should not be based solely on the NMOS experience. These two competitions differ significantly in focus and question difficulty. As such, even students who did well in NMOS should approach the next stage with a fresh mindset and be prepared to start anew.
Teacher Yu Xian then gave a detailed breakdown of the exam structure and expectations for RMO and APMOPS compared to NMOS. He pointed out that both competitions cover a wider range of topics and require deeper understanding. Given the limited preparation time, he encouraged parents to help their children plan carefully for revision and practice. For more challenging content, he highlighted the importance of progressing through four key stages of learning, from understanding the concept to applying it confidently.
The session also covered important topics such as goal-setting, managing expectations, and strategies for handling tough questions.
Towards the end, Teacher Yu Xian introduced the course structure and learning plan that Kangaroo Study has developed for Primary 5 students, providing parents with a clear preparation roadmap. All attendees also received copies of the RMO All-in-One Practice Book and APMOPS All-in-One Practice Book as additional learning resources.
P5 Semester 2 Class As we move into Semester 2, our curriculum will begin transitioning towards more advanced topics relevant to RMO and APMOPS, both of which take place in early Primary 6. Students will be introduced to new and more complex areas such as fraction decomposition, circles and sectors, travel problems with changing speeds, and multiple catching-up or meeting-up problems, topics that demand stronger logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. To support this progression, Semester 2 classes place greater emphasis on building students’ analytical thinking. For example, in tackling number puzzles, students will learn to apply strategies such as extreme case analysis, helping them approach unfamiliar or non-routine problems with confidence and independence.
