RMO Open Class Recap: Tackling Number Theory Problems with Tr. Yu Xian
On Sunday, August 10, Tr. Yu Xian conducted an RMO open class for P5 students at Kangaroo Study.
The session focused on "Divisibility / Remainder Problems", a core concept in Number Theory and a common feature in RMO papers.
Lesson Walkthrough
Tr. Yu Xian provided detailed explanations and in-depth analysis for each problem, helping students strengthen and consolidate key and challenging concepts.
Under Tr. Yu Xian's guidance, students gradually shifted from grasping the basic concepts to uncovering deeper patterns and logical structures within number theory. The lesson unfolded through 4 thoughtfully chosen problems, each developing a structured understanding of key concepts:
- Question 1: This question tested students' understanding of divisibility concepts. Students were required to analyse the digit positions based on given conditions and apply divisibility rules.
- Question 2: Of a higher difficulty level, this question assessed students' ability to apply a combination of concepts and logical reasoning.
- Question 3: This question introduced the concept of Division with Remainder and analyses students' skills in pattern recognition.
- Question 4: An in-depth exploration of the properties of remainder operations. Students needed to understand how remainders can be manipulated through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Throughout the session, Tr. Yu Xian actively moved around the classroom to observe and guide students. He provided timely feedback and helped reinforce their learning through hands-on practice.
This RMO open class offered students not only a solid grasp of number theory concepts but also a comprehensive training in learning methods and thinking approaches, from understanding to application. Compared to rote memorisation of formulas, this process transforms complex number theory topics into engaging and accessible ones.
About the Teacher
Graduated with a major in Data Science and Analytics (BSc. Hons) from the National University of Singapore. Teacher Yu Xian has 7+ years of experience in teaching Maths and Sciences. An ASEAN Scholarship holder and Math Olympiad awardee, he has earned accolades such as SMO Silver and AMC Gold.
Currently serving as Kangaroo Study’s P5 InCharge, he specializes in guiding students in Math Olympiad preparation through encouraging curiosity and independent thinking.
Parent Feedback
After the class, many parents expressed that Tr. Yu Xian's explanations were clear, and allowed for their children to easily understand the materials and solve problems. Some also specifically mentioned the positive classroom atmosphere and how their children were already looking forward to learning from him in future sessions.
