P5 Open Class Recap: Tackling Circle Problems with Tr. Shane

This Saturday, Tr. Shane conducted an open class for P5 students on the topic “Circle Problems.”

Circle problems is a guaranteed topic in RMO and APMOPS for the past 3 years. Mastering these problems requires flexible thinking and precise problem-solving techniques.

01 Classroom Highlights

During the class, Shane guided students through three common types of circle geometry problems, helping them systematically tackle the circle-related questions often seen in RMO and APMOPS.

Question 1
Focused on teaching students how to calculate the areas of “corner” and “bow” shapes.
Question 2
Explored how to find the area of a “leaf” shape by transforming it into two “bows.”
Question 3
Applied the “whole minus blank” method in depth — identifying simpler shapes to represent the whole — and showed that even when only the straight segment length of a “bow” is known, its area can still be calculated.
Question 4
Used the ideas of segmentation and completion, combining shaded parts together and then applying the “whole minus blank” approach to solve the problem.

The classroom atmosphere was lively, with students eagerly raising their hands and showing curiosity and enthusiasm for each problem. Through repeated practice and discussion, they gradually became familiar with the process of reasoning and logical thinking.

Tr. Shane continuously guided students throughout the class, using questions, explanations, and marking exercises to help them gradually grasp complex concepts, ensuring that every student kept up with the lesson.

After covering the main problem types, students took a short after-class test to review and consolidate what they had learned in class.

At the end of the lesson, Tr. Shane held one-on-one discussions to address individual doubts, helping students organize their thinking and consolidate what they had learned, bringing the class to a fulfilling conclusion.
