First Secondary Math Olympiad Open Class of the New Term: 3 Algebra Methods in One Lesson
Can a student who did well in primary MO continue to succeed at the secondary level?
How should students prepare for the SMO?
What other competitions are available besides the SMO?
As the holidays end, students are moving up to a new grade. Many students and parents interested in competitions have questions, especially about preparing for the SMO in June 2026. The problem is, secondary school students have few Math Olympiad opportunities to gain experience.
This year is different. The Spring Cup (SCMO) Secondary Section is being held in Singapore for the first time in late January, giving students a chance to experience a secondary-level math competition before the SMO.
So, what are the key characteristics of secondary school mathematics competitions?
1.Algebra is the Key Focus, Accounting for More than 40%
First of all, in terms of the topics assessed, whether it is SCMO Junior or SMO Junior, algebra is the main focus. As shown in the figure below, it often accounts for more than 40% of the content. Therefore, algebra will be a key component in achieving good results.
2.Algebra is Assessed from Multiple Perspectives
Not only is algebra tested frequently, but the ways in which it is assessed are also diverse. From testing basic concepts to the integrated application of formulas, the assessment covers a wide range of perspectives.
To help students interested in secondary school math competitions gain a deeper understanding of these competitions at the start of the new term and to prepare for future competitions, we will offer a free workshop focusing on the key topic—algebra.
