P4 Classes Now Open | Kangaroo Study 2026 Semester 1 Enrollment Guide

1. Building a Strong Start for P4
For students moving into P4, the GEP selection stage is over—this is the golden period to begin serious Olympiad Math training. After three years of schooling, students already have solid comprehension and calculation skills, making them ready to dive into the foundational content of various Olympiad modules. Learning these core concepts not only equips them to solve many classic, engaging problems, but also sparks deeper interest in math and builds essential thinking skills for future competition success. At the same time, this stage is crucial for strengthening mastery of fractions and decimals, which are heavily tested in both competitions and the PSLE.

2. Why Systematic Learning Matters

Many parents find that their child’s competition results plateau because their learning process is fragmented. A common approach is: “Sign up for a competition, then just drill past papers.” This leads to:

· Shallow understanding of concepts.
· Inability to apply knowledge to new problem variations.
· Endless repetition without genuine improvement—progress relying heavily on innate talent.

Olympiad math is not like swimming or cycling, where short-term practice is enough to master the skill. Instead, it’s a complete, interconnected curriculum covering 7 major modules. Many topics build on each other, requiring several years of structured learning.

In P4, students enter the bridge year—where the foundational and advanced levels meet. This is when core knowledge in all major modules begins:
· Counting – Addition & Multiplication Principles
· Calculation – Fractions & Decimals
· Speed/Distance Problems – Complex meeting & chasing scenarios
· Number Theory – Place Value Principles
· Geometry – The “Half Model”
· Word Problems – Equation Method for Applications

At Kangaroo.Study, our structured learning pathway and “teach the why” philosophy help students achieve true mastery, building both speed and adaptability for competition success.

Learning Focus
(1) Calculation – Starting from Zero
P4 marks the expansion from whole numbers into decimals and fractions—formats heavily tested in competitions and PSLE. We ensure students fully understand fractional and decimal operations, then reinforce them through ample practice.

(2) Number Theory – Core Analytical Methods
Students learn essential methods like place value principles and two key perspectives on numbers: factors & multiples, primes & composites. These become the entry point for tackling even complex number theory problems.

(3) Geometry – Extending & Deepening Skills
After mastering basic shapes and area in P3, students now learn common competition models such as equal-area transformations and the half model. We also cover problem-solving strategies like formula-based, partition-based, and “whole minus empty space” methods—building strong spatial and modeling skills.

4. Teacher Introduction

Teacher Zhang Boqian (Teach in English)

Teacher Bo Qian hails from Changchun, Jilin, China. At the age of 16, he achieved the highest score in the high school entrance examination and was awarded a full scholarship to Raffles Institution, Singapore’s top-tier junior college. This marked the beginning of his academic journey in Singapore, where he later graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS). With 15 years of experience living in Singapore, he possesses a profound understanding of the local education system, academic pathways, and student needs.

Teacher Bo Qian has garnered accolades in numerous national and international competitions, including:
· Gold Medal in the Hua Luogeng Gold Cup Mathematics Competition
· Perfect Score in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC8)
· Top 1% in the AMC10/12, qualifying for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME)

Teaching Experience & Results
With over six years of local teaching experience, he has systematically studied Singapore’s curriculum and mainstream competitions (e.g., NMOS, APMOPS, RMO). Under his guidance, dozens of students have achieved outstanding results in prestigious contests:

2023 Highlights:
NMOS: 12 Gold Medals (2 students ranked Top 30)
SMOPS: 1 Platinum Award + 10 Gold Medals
RIPMWC: 7 High Distinctions (HD)
IMSO: 1 Gold Medal
2024 Highlights:
NMOS: 11 Gold Medals
SMOPS: 1 Platinum Award + 2 Gold Medals
RIPMWC: 6 High Distinctions (HD)

5. Teaching Model
Three Key Features
Parent Observation – One parent may sit in during class to observe without disrupting lessons.
Refund Anytime – Tuition is refundable on a pro-rated basis.
Dual-Teacher Classroom – One main teacher delivers lessons while an assistant provides real-time student feedback.

Teaching Principles
Guidance over Spoon-Feeding – We never directly give solutions or force memorization.
No Leaving Without Understanding – Students must correct all errors from pre-tests, homework, class examples, and post-tests before leaving.
Cultivating Achievement – We encourage rather than criticize, fostering confidence and motivation.

Nine-Step Teaching Cycle
From example explanation to post-class review, ensuring mastery and strong study habits.
