The PSLE Listening Comprehension exam is just around the corner. Although the listening test has a limited number of questions (English has 20 Questions and Chinese has 10 Questions) and carries only 20 marks, accounting for just 10% of the overall PSLE score, as parents, we all hope our children excel in every PSLE exam and achieve outstanding results.
As the exam approaches, I’ve received many private messages from parents asking:
l Which key points should children review once more before the listening comprehension exam?
l What details should children pay attention to during the exam?
l What are the common mistakes to avoid?
l What should they do if they feel uncertain when answering?
To help parents address these questions and ensure children are fully prepared, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to the PSLE Listening Comprehension exam. We hope these tips will help students achieve their best on the exam.
From the question type requirements, it can be seen that all listening questions are multiple-choice questions, each with three options, and children need to fill in the answer sheet.
So, I would like to share with parents some points about the listening comprehension in the PSLE language test.
The PSLE listening test has 10-20 questions and a total of 7 listening passages. The content revolves around students' daily life and school life, including notices, dialogues, road maps, advertisements, instructions, stories and other passages.
Each passage will be played twice, and the questions and options will only be played once. It is worth noting that:
1. Grasp the specific information of the passage, including characters, events, time, place and numbers.
2. Understand the order of things. Especially the road map.
3. Understand the speaker's views and distinguish the views of different interlocutors.
4. Listen to the implicit information in the passage and make appropriate inferences and predictions.
Next, let's take a look at the test analysis:
Related test points may cover:
Question 1: What is the main purpose of this notice/notice?
Question 2: Listen to a conversation and then answer the questions.
Question 3: Roadmap.
Test students' grasp of key information from listening, and whether they understand the logical order of the entire listening text. Pay attention to the trap of the roadmap. Listen to the whole paragraph before answering to avoid falling into the "trap".
Question 4: listen to the story and answer questions
Question 5: Listen to understand the content of the passage
Question 6: Answer related questions through a short conversation.
Question 7: Often asks: "What will be the answer (how to say) next?" Candidates must pay attention to what was said in the previous sentence.
Question 8: Listen to the story and answer the questions mentioned in the story. Pay attention to
the cause, process and result of the story
From the above analysis, we can see that the difficulty is relatively not very high, and from the questions, we can see that the types include announcements, dialogues, road maps, stories, introductions, news, broadcasts, etc., which are all content we can hear in daily life. Therefore, the content of the listening part is close to life and combined with real life, so that students can truly apply the language knowledge they have learned in daily communication.
Then, here are some things to note for the listening test:
1. After getting the answer sheet for the listening test, quickly read all the questions and answers.
Use the time required by the examiner to play the listening test, quickly read the questions and answers, and determine the following two issues:
A. Understand what the key words in the question are asking.
B. Understand the differences between the three options.
2. When the test begins, listen to the content of the first recording with full concentration.
Keep your eyes on the questions, catch the sentences where the key words appear, and write down the answers.
3. Listen carefully to the second recording.
At this time, you must check again carefully to make sure that your choice is not wrong, and make changes if necessary.
Last but not least, here is our blessing to the students entering the exam tomorrow:
We hope all of you give your best effort in the listening exam tomorrow, stay attentive, and approach the exam with confidence, honouring the hard work and dedication you’ve put in all along.
Here, all the teachers at Kangaroo.Study sincerely wish everyone great success and outstanding results in the PSLE listening comprehension exam!
