Start Strong: Begin PSLE Math Preparation This Holiday Season
The holiday season is now halfway through, and many students are utilizing this period to prepare for the PSLE exam next year. Some have started their revision early, while others plan to focus on the revision only after learning the all the P6 concepts. Regardless of the approach, the holiday break provides a valuable opportunity to lay a strong foundation for PSLE success.
Why Begin PSLE Math Preparation During the Holiday Season?
Under normal circumstances, students are expected to finish learning all the P6 Math modules by the end of May. The June holidays typically provide a short break before the intensive revision phase begins. From July to September, students have approximately 92 days to prepare for the PSLE. During this period, students need to attend regular school lessons. Some may also need to prepare for DSA written tests and interviews. Additionally, the PSLE oral and listening exams scheduled in mid-August and mid-September further reduce the available time for revision.
If we assume no other distractions and evenly divide the 92 days across the four core subjects, each subject would have roughly 23 days for revision. For Math, which consists of 12 modules, this means less than 2 days per module (23 ÷ 12 ≈ 1.92 days). Clearly, this is not enough for thorough preparation. Beginning the preparation during the holidays can help alleviate time constraints and enhance readiness.
Therefore, it is better for students to master all the P6 Math concepts by the end of the holiday season so that they can focus on intensive revision next year. This approach maximizes time for practicing problem-solving, addressing weaker areas, and tackling advanced questions, boosting readiness and confidence for the exam. Students who attended Kangaroo.Study’s PSLE Holiday Courses and followed our PSLE system should now have built a strong foundation in all the essential P6 Math concepts. If you have missed out on our holiday classes, it’s crucial to at least master the most important and challenging topics.
In preparing for the PSLE Math exam, it's essential to understand the key topics that hold the most weight and the ones that tend to present the greatest challenges. After analyzing the past three years' exam papers, our teachers at Kangaroo.study have divided the Math syllabus into twelve modules, which include topics like Whole Numbers, Ratio, Fractions, Decimals, Rate and Speed, Algebra, Percentage, Measurement, Area and Volume, Geometry, Data Representation and Interpretation, and Data Analysis.
From the 2021–2023 analysis, the most important topics to prioritize are Area and Volume (21.7%), Fractions, Ratio & Percentage (21.7%), and Geometry (16.3%). These areas contribute significantly to the overall score, so mastering them is key to performing well in the exam.
When it comes to difficulty, a closer look at Paper 2 reveals that the most challenging topics are also Area and Volume (31%), Fractions, Ratio & Percentage (25%), and Geometry (14.5%). These modules require strong problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding, especially since they appear frequently in Paper 2.
To optimize revision, students should allocate ample time to these high-weightage and difficult topics. By focusing early on these core areas, students can build a solid foundation and tackle the more complex problems with confidence.
