As the first article of our series, this article will provide a detailed introduction to the NMOS. Before registration begins, let’s dive into what NMOS is all about!
This article covers:
1. Overview of NMOS
2. Categories and grade divisions
3. Competition Rounds and Registration Process
4. Competition Details
5. Award Categories
6. Importance of the competition
7. Kangaroo.Study Students’ Outstanding Achievements
8. How to Prepare for NMOS + Exclusive Preparation Resources
---
1. Overview of NMOS
The National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) is an initiative by NUS High School, in partnership with the Singapore Mathematical Society. It aims to spark children’s interest in mathematics and challenge them to unlock their mathematical potential.
---

2. Categories and grade divisions
Starting from 2024, NMOS is exclusively open to Primary 5 students.
- Previously (before 2024), students from P1 to P5 could participate, with around 5,000–6,000 participants.
- Now, with only P5 students eligible, the number of participants in 2024 is approximately 3,000.
---

3. Competition Rounds and Registration Process
From 2024 onwards, NMOS has shifted from a two-round scoring system to a single-round written test.
Exam Location: Students’ respective schools.
Registration: All participants must register through their schools. Individual registrations are not allowed.
Registration Period: March 7, 2025, to April 7, 2025.
---
4. Competition Details
(1) 2025 Competition Date
The school will hold the competition on 15 July 2025, between 2:00 PM and 4:30 PM, within a 90-minute time slot of school’s choice.

(2) Exam Format & Content
a) Format: A single-round written test lasting 90 minutes, with a total score of 80 points.
Number of Questions: 35 questions, with the following distribution:
  - Questions 1–10: 2 points each (20 points total).
  - Questions 11–20: 3 points each (30 points total).
  - Questions 21–35: 4 points each (60 points total).
b) Content: The exam covers topics from both previous rounds, with a focus on ‘Geometry’ and ‘Word Problems’.

Based on the changes in the 2024 NMOS, please take note of the following points regarding question types and areas of assessment:
1-Fewer Questions, Higher Difficulty:
   - Previously, NMOS had two rounds with 50 questions (30 in Round 1 + 20 in Round 2).
   - Starting in 2024, the exam has only 35 questions in 90 minutes, significantly increasing the difficulty.
2-Lower Margin for Error:
   - With fewer questions, each question carries more weight. Mistakes can have a greater impact on rankings and award levels.
   - Students should aim to solve all questions within their ability range to avoid losing points.
3-More Comprehensive Questions:
   - Questions are now more integrated, testing not only mathematical knowledge but also problem-solving speed, accuracy, and flexibility.
(3) Results Announcement
Results will be released within 10 working days after the competition date. Detailed results will be communicated through the respective schools. No phone inquiries will be accepted.
---
5. Award Categories
(1) Individual Awards
- Gold Award
- Silver Award
- Bronze Award
- Honourable Mention
- Participation Certificate
Awards are based on percentile rankings. With only P5 students participating starting in 2024, the number of Gold awardees is approximately 40–50, while Silver awardees number around 200.
- Certificates: All participants will receive a certificate indicating their achievement level (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Honourable Mention, or Participation).
- Medals: The top 30 participants will receive individual medals.

(2) Top-Performing girl
A certificate will be awarded to the top-performing girl from each participating school in NMOS, provided that she achieves at least a Silver award.
(3) Team Awards
- Trophy: Awarded to the top 20 school teams.
- Ranking Criteria: Based on the combined scores of the top 4 participants from each school.
(4) NMOS and IMSO
IMSO stands for ‘International Mathematics and Science Olympiad’, which is an international-level competition open to primary school students under the age of 12 from around the world. NMOS serves as the gateway for IMSO selection. The Top 20 individual winners in NMOS will be shortlisted to join the IMSO training squad.
---
6. Significance of NMOS
1.Support for DSA Applications
Competitions such as NMOS, RMO, APMOPS, and others serve an important purpose — they are valuable credentials for DSA to top schools.
For DSA, not only NUSH, but many other prestigious schools (except for Hwa Chong Institution) recognize NMOS Gold and Silver medals as strong achievements.
2.Pathway to IMSO Training Squad
The Top 20 winners of NMOS will qualify for the IMSO training squad, with the potential to be selected for the national team representing Singapore at IMSO. The Top 30 winners will be invited to join NUSH School’s Einstein Club.
3. For students targeting admission to NUSH
(1) NMOS participation helps prepare for the NUSH DSA written test.
(2) Students who achieve Top 20 in NMOS will receive a CO directly
