The NUS High School of Math and Science (NUSH) is an independent High School that offers a six year Integrated Programme. Unlike in other Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges in Singapore, students do not take O-Level, A-Level, or IB diploma. Instead, the six year programme leads to the NUSH High School diploma.

NUSH Achievements
NUSH students are known to be the recipients of many famous awards and scholarships. For instance, in the year 2023, 13 of its students were awarded The Lee Kwan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science and 36 students were awarded an A*Star Award. Additionally, its students won several gold medals in International Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematical Olympiads in that same year alone.

NUSH students are accepted to many prestigious universities around the world. For example, here is a look at the Global University Offers of the NUSH Class of 2023:

NUSH CCAs
In addition to the high academic achievements of NUSH students, there are also unique Co-curricular Activites (CCAs) such as the Youth Flying Club (YFC) where students can learn aerodynamic concepts and compete in an annual flying competition. Despite the heavy Math and Science focus of the school, CCAs such as Chinese Orchestra and Drama Club allow students to grow in their knowledge and appreciation of the Humanities.

NUSH Admission
NUSH admits 100% of their cohort through the Direct School Admission Secondary (DSA-Sec) Exercise. NUSH does not participate in the Secondary 1 posting exercise. If there are still vacancies after the DSA-Sec Exercise, students may be admitted through a Supplementary Intake Exercise (SIE) in November.

To participate in the DSA-Sec exercise for NUSH, you should submit an application via the official MOE DSA- Sec Portal.
There are multiple phases of selection:
1. Selection Test
2. Shortlisted applicants only: Selection Camp (applicants who need to be assessed further will be asked to attend a Selection Interview)
Here are some additional details about each phase of selection:

Selection Test: This will consist of Math and Science questions. There are approximately 40 questions in Math section (a mix of open ended and multiple choice questions) and 30 multiple choice questions in the Science section. To prepare effectively for this test, students should be well versed in Math up to the secondary school level in topics such as algebra and geometry. For the Science section, students should prepare by being well versed in biology, chemistry, and physics as well as keep up with current developments in science news.

Selection Camp: A one day camp consisting of various Math and Science activities. Students will be asked to participate in various tasks. The level of questions tested is often beyond primary school science. Students may be asked to conduct experiments with materials provided and answer questions based on given information. For shortlisted applicants only.

Cohort Size:
There are over 2000 applicants every year. After the Selection Test, Selection Camp for shortlisted applicants, and Selection Interview for those who need to be assessed further, only approximately 180 are admitted each year, meaning that the acceptance rate for NUSH is approximately 9%. For example, in 2024, there were 173 Year 1 students.

NUSH Admission in 2024In 2024, these were the important dates for Year 1 DSA-Sec exercise at NUSH:

Important: You only need to use 1 option in application form to specify either math or science (not both). The Selection Test has math and science questions for all applicants.

NMOS and NUSH Admission
The National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) is an annual Math competition organized by NUS High School.

Students who are among the top 12 scorers in NMOS will allow a student to enter the Singapore National IMSO (International Mathematics and Science Olympiad) team which will lead to a confirmed offer into NUSH for P5 students.

Achieving a gold or silver medal in NMOS is recognized for DSA admission in NUSH and several other top schools. Of course, another advantage of participating in NMOS is it will give students an experience in answering Math questions which are more difficult than school and PSLE math questions. This experience gives them valuable practice for the NUSH Selection Test.
