June Holiday Class | P4 Math Course Starting Soon

Why P4 Is a Critical Year for Olympiad Preparation

For P4 students, this stage is not only a starting point but also a key transition that shapes their future competitiveness in Math Olympiad.
Since 2024, NMOS is no longer open to P4 students, which means they’ve lost an early opportunity to test themselves. With APMOPS and RMO approaching, strong academic planning is now essential for younger students.
Our teachers at Kangaroo Study have observed that many P4 students tend to underestimate the breadth of knowledge tested in NMOS.

⬇️ NMOS Topic Coverage Overview ⬇️

As shown above, NMOS covers an exceptionally wide range, from arithmetic and geometry to number theory, spanning seven major modules. The scope makes it difficult to prepare effectively through last-minute cramming. Without proper planning and a structured learning system, students are likely to struggle with these foundational topics, affecting their long-term readiness.

That’s why P4 is a crucial transition year, where many core Olympiad topics are first introduced.

Part 1: Focus Areas of the P4 June Holiday Programme

At Kangaroo Study, we’ve built a spiral-up curriculum for P4 that aligns with trends from three major Olympiad competitions.
This term break, we’ll focus on:

1. Counting Techniques, Key Methods & Classic Questions
Challenging geometry counting questions often involve the principle of inclusion-exclusion. These questions not only appear frequently in NMOS but also in RMO and APMOPS.
Students need to be fluent in both basic geometry counting and applying inclusion-exclusion to simplify complex problems.

2. Percentage-Based Application Problems – Highest Weighted Section
Percentage-based problems are one of the most commonly tested topics in NMOS, often even appearing as final questions. The key is understanding how to translate between quantities and percentage values—for example, linking fractions/percentages to total units in "find 1u" type problems.
Our systematic teaching approach at Kangaroo Study focuses on explaining core principles in depth, enabling students to master problem-solving and apply what they learn flexibly.

Part 2: P4 June Holiday Class Schedule
To help every student make the most of the holidays, our programme is split into three periods. Each period covers the same content, so students only need to sign up for one.

This round of P4 June Holiday Classes includes 8 sessions in total, focusing on core topics and helping students:
  • Clarify key concepts
  • Strengthen logical reasoning
  • Build a solid Olympiad foundation and NMOS readiness

Each period includes 7 lessons + 1 final assessment, scheduled in either the afternoon or evening depending on class type, giving flexibility to match different student schedules.
We also offer different class levels to support students with varied learning progress and needs.

Class Structure & Levels
To support personalised and goal-driven learning, Kangaroo Study has developed a tiered curriculum system for P4, with the following class types:

Initiation

For students who are new to Math Olympiad and want to gradually build interest and basic skills.
This course introduces core math concepts and common problem types through step-by-step explanations and basic training, helping students develop logical thinking and problem-solving confidence.
Cultivation

For students with some Olympiad background who want to solidify their foundational knowledge.
The course uses structured teaching and practice to help students build a standardised framework for problem-solving and strengthen the thinking skills required to transition from school math to Olympiad-level learning.
Innovation

For students with a solid foundation who want to enhance adaptability and strategic thinking.
This course focuses on variations in question types and solution strategies. Students will train systematically and explore different perspectives to form their own problem-solving framework and thinking model, preparing for higher-level Olympiad content.
Exploration

For high-performing students with clear goals and a competition plan.
The course comprehensively covers NMOS key topics and high-frequency problem types. Through simulation drills and focused lectures, students will boost their competition readiness and problem-solving breakthroughs to stand out in top-tier competitions.

Through this tiered system, each student can grow at a pace that suits them best, ensuring personalised growth and measurable progress.

Our Teaching Team
The P4 Mathematics course is taught by three experienced teachers, each with a distinctive teaching style. They have a strong command of fundamental teaching skills and clear logic, and they excel at explaining concepts from the students’ perspective in a simple and accessible way. Their lessons are well-paced and content-rich, striking a balance between depth and engagement. This effectively sparks students’ interest in learning and has earned high recognition from both students and parents.

Tr Zhangtao

Graduate of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, resident S-level (highest tier) teacher at Fangtian Education, and Head of Lower Primary at Kangaroo.Study. He is highly familiar with the primary school Olympiad system and the question patterns of major competitions.
Teaching achievements: Multiple students have won Gold in the Yingchun Cup (equivalent to RMO). In 2023, one of his students scored 21 in AMC8, ranking in the top 1% globally. 75% of his students advanced to GEP Round 2, and 25% were successfully selected for GEP classes. In the 2024 SASMO competition, 87.5% of his students received medals, with 25% winning Gold; 80% advanced to GEP Round 2, and 30% were successfully admitted to GEP classes.

Tr Ma Zhangchi
Head of the P6 PSLE Department at Kangaroo Study, Teacher Ma is the architect behind the current P5 and P6 PSLE syllabus and teaching materials. Recognized as the fastest-growing teacher in the organization, he combines academic excellence with a passion for nurturing student success.
A Computer Science graduate from Murdoch University, Teacher Ma’s foundation in mathematics was forged early—he was a Math Olympiad competitor and multiple first-place awardee during his primary school years. Born into a family of math educators, he began honing his teaching skills as a teaching assistant during his university days.
In the classroom, Teacher Ma emphasizes clarity, active engagement, and enthusiasm, ensuring every student is empowered to reach their highest potential in the PSLE Math exam. His dynamic approach and dedication make learning both effective and inspiring.

Tr Samuel

Graduated from University of Texas at Austin with a major in Economics. During high school, Teacher Samuel tutored his peers in Math through his membership in the National Mathematics Honor Society. During and after his university studies, he gained experience both as a teaching assistant and a tutor, particularly in the subjects of Maths and Economics.
Teacher Samuel ensures an interactive atmosphere in the classroom where students feel comfortable asking and answering questions. He believes in fostering a genuine passion for Math in students and guiding them to understand the deeper meaning behind problems and solutions.
