A Magical Start to the June Holiday: Teacher Smith’s First P3 Olympiad Class

This morning, Teacher Smith kicked off his first Primary 3 June Holiday Math Olympiad class, bringing his signature blend of clarity, energy, and fun to the classroom. As the Head of our Primary 3 department and the lead instructor for the P1 and P2 Olympiad programmes, Tr. Smith is no stranger to helping young learners thrive. For many of the students, this was also their very first experience with Olympiad-style learning — an exciting new chapter in their math journey!

By the end of the session, they weren’t just solving problems—they were smiling, laughing, and asking for more!
To give you a glimpse of the experience, we’ve prepared a full classroom recording:
A 3-minute clip that showcases how Tr. Smith introduces a new concept in an approachable, engaging way that keeps students motivated and confident.

Who is Teacher Smith?

Teacher Smith brings over four years of teaching experience in both Mathematics and Computer Science. This unique combination allows him to simplify complex ideas and transform them into digestible, step-by-step strategies for young learners.
As Head of our Primary 3 department, and lead teacher for P1 and P2 Olympiad programmes, Smith plays a critical role in helping students excel in GEP preparation, SASMO, SMKC, and other foundational competitions. Beyond technical know-how, he’s known for his ability to foster a vibrant yet structured classroom environment—balancing warmth, discipline, and active participation.

When asked why he chose to join Kangaroo.Study, Smith shared:
“I was truly inspired by the teaching standards and methods here. The highly interactive lessons push students to think critically and find solutions on their own. Even when they make mistakes, we support and guide them patiently—because we believe that real learning happens when students build confidence through discovery. That’s what I love most about teaching here.”

Inside Today’s Class: A Glimpse into the Magic

The day began with a warm 15-minute parent briefing, where Tr. Smith outlined the goals and philosophy of the programme. For many families, this was the first time they had encountered Olympiad-level learning at the P3 stage. Tr. Smith patiently explained the value of Olympiad training—not just for competitions, but for building resilience, logical reasoning, and long-term academic confidence.

Once the students settled in, Tr. Smith introduced class expectations: rules, homework procedures, and classroom habits that would support a respectful and productive environment.

The core of today’s lesson was the Counting Principle. Through a lively mix of examples, classroom discussion, and even a moment of role-play where Tr. Smith became a superhero solving counting problems, students explored systematic strategies for solving seemingly tricky questions. The energy in the room was high, and laughter was frequent—but learning was never compromised.

To conclude, students were given a short after-class test. What stood out? Several students chose to stay behind to finish their corrections—on day one. That’s the kind of classroom culture Tr. Smith builds: one where students take ownership of their progress and feel proud to go the extra mile.
