Singapore Ranks 8th Globally at the 66th IMO, Kangaroo Study Student Clinches Gold Again! The 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) officially concluded on 20 July 2025 in Sunshine Coast, Australia. This year’s competition brought together 630 top math students from 110 countries and regions around the world. Regarded as the most prestigious mathematics competition for secondary school students globally, the IMO is known for its high level of difficulty and international recognition. It’s the ultimate platform for the world’s brightest young minds to compete and shine.
After six challenging problems across two days, the China team took the top spot with a dominant score of 231. The USA came in second with 216 points, followed closely by South Korea (203), Japan (196) and Poland (196, tied with Japan). Rounding out the global top 10 were Israel (6th), India (7th), Singapore (8th), Vietnam (9th) and Turkey (10th). Singapore once again secured a spot in the world’s top 10 – a truly remarkable result given our small population size, showing the depth and consistency of our mathematical strength.
This year’s individual scores were more tightly clustered. The gold medal cutoff was set at 35 points, silver at 28, and bronze at 19. In total, 67 students received gold medals (72 including Russian contestants competing individually), 104 received silver, and 145 earned bronze. An additional 132 students received honourable mentions for solving at least one full problem. Three Golds for Singapore – Shining Bright at 8th Place
Singapore continued its strong track record, achieving 3 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze – ranking 8th globally. Out of six participating students, three scored 35 points and were tied at 27th place in the individual ranking, earning gold medals. Two others won silver, and one received bronze.
Interestingly, Problem 6 – widely considered the toughest question this year – was proposed by Singapore’s own problem-setting team. This reflects not only our competitive ability but also our growing role and influence in shaping the international math community. Kangaroo Study’s Yang Yihan Wins Gold Again – Two Years in a Row One of the gold medalists, Yang Yihan, is a student from Kangaroo Study’s Exploration Programme. This is already his second consecutive gold at the IMO. Last year, he was the youngest member of the Singapore team and clinched Singapore’s only gold medal, ranking 14th globally. photo of Yihan winning the only gold medal of Singapore at last year's IMO Yihan’s journey from local competitions to the world stage has been driven by his genuine love for mathematics and deep focus. His achievement reflects the core values of Kangaroo Study’s Exploration Programme – to identify potential early, provide structured guidance, and support students with long-term plans so they can go further, and grow stronger. Dominating SMO 2025 – Kangaroo Study’s Results Lead the Nation Beyond the international stage, Kangaroo Study has also delivered outstanding results at this year’s Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) – Junior Section. Out of nearly 4,000 students who took the SMO Junior, only 118 qualified for Round 2. Of these, 51 were from Kangaroo Study – accounting for a massive 43% of the total national qualifiers. And yet, our students made up only 2% of all test-takers. This speaks volumes. With such a high success rate, Kangaroo Study has once again proven itself as one of the top math enrichment providers in Singapore, with results that clearly lead the field. We’re proud of every student who has pushed themselves and grown through this journey – whether at the IMO or the SMO. Beyond Medals – We Care About Passion and Purpose The road to mathematical excellence is never easy. As our Head of Secondary Competitions, Mr. Cao, often says: “Secondary school competitions are a tough path. Only a handful of students ever make it into the national team. So to every student on this journey, we hope you’ll slow down once in a while and enjoy the view along the way. Don’t treat math just as a tool for winning medals. When you learn to truly enjoy it, you’ll go further and be happier.” At Kangaroo Study, we teach Olympiad math to both primary and secondary students, and also support learners preparing for GEP and PSLE. But no matter what we’re teaching – or to whom – we always remind ourselves to resist a purely results-driven mindset. During lesson planning, our teachers don’t just focus on the solution. We also discuss the thinking behind each problem, and how we can help students experience the joy of discovering ideas for themselves. Math is not just about the outcome. It’s a journey – one that’s worth exploring, and worth loving. We hope every student who walks through our doors will carry with them not just achievements, but also the original passion they started with. To all the students who made it to the international stage, and to those still quietly striving behind the scenes – we see you, and we salute you. May you continue to grow, persevere, and enjoy the beauty of mathematics. And on this journey of growth, Kangaroo Study will always walk alongside you!
