Want to Ace Math DSA? APMOPS Might Be the Key
Direct School Admission (DSA) through mathematics is one of the most popular admission routes, and the competition is undoubtedly competitive. If your child is preparing for DSA, now is the time to understand how the Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS) can be a powerful stepping stone into some of Singapore’s most prestigious schools.
In this article, we will unpack what most might not know about APMOPS – its background and purpose, its link to DSA success, and how early preparation can give your child a critical edge.
Organizer of APMOPS: Hwa Chong Institution (HCI)
Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), with over a century of history, is renowned for its integrated and holistic curriculum that develops students into future leaders. In pursuit of excellence, HCI also offers specialised talent programmes such as the Science and Math Talent Programme (SMTP) that grooms high-potential students in STEM. Offered exclusively at HCI, SMTP nurtures mathematically talented students through a rich array of elective modules, workshops and enrichment that go beyond the core curriculum. Students also benefit from learning under experts from top universities, established industry professionals, and experienced in-house lecturers, gaining valuable insights and real-world perspectives.
HCI’s strength in mathematics education is also reflected in its outstanding achievements on the global stage. In 2025, among only 6 students selected nationally to represent Singapore at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), 2 were from HCI who both managed who clinch Gold medals.
Overview of APMOPS
In line with this mission, HCI first held the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (SMOPS) in 1990 to cultivate interest and excellence in Mathematics among primary school students. Over the years, this has evolved into the Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS), opening participation to students across the region. This evolution underscores HCI’s role as a regional leader in Mathematics education and highlights APMOPS as an early platform to identify and nurture top mathematical talent.
Exam Focus and Distinctive Features
You can expect APMOPS to challenge participants with non-routine, high-level questions that go far beyond the school or PSLE level syllabus. APMOPS tests logic, strategic thinking, and even creativity, effectively offering students a taste of Olympiad-style mathematics on an international scale.
Our centre has analysed the modules found on APMOPS in the last 10 years:
Based on the data collected, Geometry questions make up the largest portion of APMOPS papers at an average of 21.7%, followed by Comprehensive and Number Theory questions (17.3% each) and Counting questions (16%). This highlights the modules for students preparing for the APMOPS to focus on.
The following 2 Counting questions are from NMOS and APMOPS respectively:
2023 NMOS: Counting—Permutation
2024 APMOPS: Counting—Permutation
The APMOPS question is more complex than the one in the National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) as it requires careful case analysis beyond simply applying a formula. While the NMOS question can be solved directly if you know the standard permutation method, the APMOPS problem demands deeper reasoning—considering overlapping digit constraints and position-based restrictions.
Significance of APMOPS Awards
Given the rigour of APMOPS, achievements in this competition are highly valuable for students applying through the DSA programme. DSA offers students a pathway to enter secondary schools before the PSLE based on their talents—Mathematics being one of the recognised areas.
The award tiers for APMOPS Round 1 are as follows:
- Platinum: Top 1.5% or top 50 students
- Gold: Next 2.5% or next 70 students
- Silver: Next 6%
- Bronze: Next 10%
With only the top 20% of approximately 3,000 participants receiving any award, competition is exceptionally intense and recognition is reserved for the best of the best.
Based on previous years and personal anecdotes, students who have achieved APMOPS Platinum may have a more outstanding profile when applying for Mathematics DSA to HCI. APMOPS Platinum awardees will also be invited to compete in the second round – the Invitation Round, which offers students greater exposure and visibility during the DSA selection process.
That said, it is important to note that DSA applications will be assessed holistically and other achievements including other Olympiad results, strong academic records and interview performance will play significant roles in the final decision.
Kangaroo Study's Recent Achievements
Students at Kangaroo Study have consistently demonstrated outstanding results in APMOPS.
- 2023: Out of 21 students who took part, 4 were awarded Platinum and 4 secured Gold.
- 2024: Out of 46 students who took part, 4 were awarded Platinum and 7 secured Gold.
These results place our students among the top performers nationwide and reflect our commitment to nurturing high-potential learners through focused preparation and expert guidance.
Preparation Tips!
While schools usually nominate Primary 6 students for APMOPS, early preparation starting from Primary 4 or 5 can help build a strong foundation in problem-solving skills. Practicing past year papers and mock exams is a crucial part of APMOPS preparation, but it should be done strategically through these 3 steps:
- Past Year Papers: Start by working through the past 10 years of APMOPS papers to gain familiarity with question types and difficulty levels.
- Re-practice the Same Papers: Reinforce your understanding, while also improving speed and accuracy.
- Mock Exams: Once the past year papers have been completed, move on to mock exams under timed conditions to simulate a real test environment and build exam stamina.
