P4 Open Class Recap: Mastering the "Travel/ Distance Problem" with Tr. Yi Jie
This weekend, Teacher Yi Jie conducted a focused and in-depth open class on “Travel/ Distance Problems” for P4 students.
The main focus of the class was on “Meeting Problems” and “Catch-up Problems”, which are clear in reasoning and highly logical. These types of problems are essential for developing students’ problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking. 1. Lesson Recap
At the beginning of the class, Teacher Yi Jie introduced the concepts of “Travel/ Distance Problems” using a guiding question. This helped the students form a clear mental picture of the problem scenario and gradually understand the problem-solving approach and methods.
As the explanation progressed, the students gradually got into the flow and began actively observing the relationships between distances and changes in speed within the problems. The entire class revolved around three selected example questions, guiding the students step by step to master the core methods for “Meeting Problems” and “Catch-up Problems.”
Question 1 (Meeting Problems) : The focus is on the most basic "meeting problem" where two objects move towards each other. Students learn that the combined speed of the two objects is what determines how quickly they meet. This is the fundamental concept of relative speed in an opposite direction, where the speeds are added together to find the time it takes to cover the total distance. Question 2 (Catch-up Problems) : This extends the concept to "catch-up problems" where one object is behind another and needs to overtake it. Students discover that the key is to use the difference in speeds to calculate the time it takes for the faster object to close the initial distance between them. The relative speed is the difference between the two speeds. Question 3 (Advanced Meeting Problems) : This problem introduces a more advanced scenario where the meeting point is not the midpoint of the journey. Students must use the information about the speeds and the distance from the midpoint to determine the total distance of the journey. This requires a deeper understanding of the relationship between distance, speed, and time, and how the difference in speed relates to the difference in distance travelled by each person.
In terms of class arrangement, the first and second questions were of similar difficulty and completed independently by the students, while the third question was more challenging and was discussed and solved together under Teacher Yi Jie’s guidance.
During this process, Teacher Yi Jie walked around the classroom to observe and guide the students, providing timely feedback and helping them further consolidate what they had learned through practice.
This open class offered the students more than just knowledge of travel/ distance problems; it was a complete exercise in learning methods and ways of thinking—from “understanding” to “application.” Compared to rote memorization of formulas, this approach made traditionally rigid problems come alive and become engaging.
2.About the Instructor: Teacher Yi Jie

Many have noted their children’s increased confidence and independence in learning, and several have expressed interest in joining more of his classes in the future. These affirmations reflect not only the quality of his instruction, but also the trust and confidence that families place in him as an educator.
4. More Details about Our Class This P4 travel/distance open class was more than just a math class, it was a true reflection of Kangaroo Study's consistent teaching approach. Through well-structured content, guided discovery, and timely feedback, it genuinely helps students build a bridge between “understanding” and “application.”
If you want your child to continue exploring the joy of mathematics in a supportive and inspiring environment, you’re welcome to join our P4 learning group and stay updated on more upcoming free open classes and activities ✨
5.How To Enroll? All students are required to complete a placement test before enrolling. This allows our team to assess the child’s current level and recommend the most suitable class.
Enrolment Process 1. Book a placement test 2. Receive assessment results and class recommendation 3. Confirm time slot and teacher, complete registration and payment
